Draft Land Code

We are drafting a land code for community consideration that will return land management jurisdiction from the federal government back to our Nation.

This website is dedicated to sharing information

about the Land Code process.

What is a Land Code?

A Land Code is a community law that would allow our First Nation to make important decisions about our lands and resources.  Currently, Canada makes those decisions "for us" under the land-related sections of the Indian Act.

A Land Code sets out the rules for how lands set aside will be managed, how land decisions will be made, and how community members can be involved in those decisions. It covers matters such as land use, environmental protection, leasing, development, and the process for resolving disputes.

A Land Code does not change ownership of lands. The lands remain lands set aside for the use and benefit of our First Nation members.
